Making Our Halloween Gourds 2005

Making a Gourd Start

Making a Gourd Start

To start, we each picked out a nice "pumpkin-y" gourd and scrubbed them clean on the outside with steel wool and cleanser. Then we cut off the tops and--wearing our trusty fiber masks!--scraped the insides clean.

Next, we penciled in faces and, using a craft knife, cut them out. They aren't very big, so we had to be careful not to break them. We sanded the cut edges for a clean look.

The next step was polishing. We used scarlet cream shoe polish for color, and then finished with a top coat of neutral shiny polish to make them gleam.

After adding the polish and buffing, these scary faces sure were shiny.
